golf rankings

Name me ONE sport (besides golf) that you can be ranked #1 while competing in only 20% of the scheduled events?
I am fully aware and in awe of Tiger Woods’ abilities and accolades. I’ve followed pga golf for some 25 years now. But he has only competed in 7 events out of a possible 36 in the last year. Most of the top golfers enter between 22 and 25 tournaments each year. Are the world rankings retroactive to your performance from a year ago or more? I can’t think of any sport that would rank you #1 for such non participation. Please enlighten me. And please no lectures about how great Woods is, or his layoff due to surgery or being a family man now. I am fully cognizant of his status. And MANY golfers have been down that road before him. I just can’t think of any other sport that would maintain a #1 status for such absence. Would they do it for Federer in Tennis? Or anyone in NASCAR racing? —NO.
Yes..world ranking points are on a rolling curve, unlike Fed Ex Cup points which restart @ Jan 1st of each year. So Tiger maintains his ranking due to his awesome start to last season.
It could be done in tennis as tennis’s ranking system is similar. If a player won just the 4 majors, since the majors carry more points, they could potentially be the # 1 ranked player, assuming all of the other tournaments were not won by 1 or 2 other players.
Boxing is the same way….if you have quality wins, especially in the heavyweight division, you could potentially be the #1 ranked contender or the champ, with very few fights…see Buster Douglas.
Throw Nascar out as that is essentially a full field event every weekend. If not full field, the contenders and pretty much everybody with the exception of the bottom dwellers show up every weekend. Not comparable, although I think it’s a joke, you can win a championship without ever winning a race, see Matt Kenseth.
Tournament fishing is the same too….if you win the bigger tournaments you could essentially win the year end money title assuming, again, that 1 or 2 other people don’t win everything else.
