The golf industry is one of the fastest growing in all of sports. With more and more new players wanting to learn the game and join in on the fun, golf jobs seem to be popping up nearly everywhere. While some industries within sports are difficult to break into and some only offer opportunities for the highly experienced, golf is a little bit different. Teaching Professional
The teaching professional is the head of the golf department at his or her golf club and this person runs the show. As a registered PGA professional, a teaching pro has the clout to go along with the skill. In order to land this golf job, a person has to complete one of the many training certification courses offered at schools and programs around the United States. This job requires a person to have an immense amount of golf skill, as well as the ability to relate that skill to others who are trying to learn the game. Teaching professionals earn great money, both in their salary and from the fees that they charge for their instruction.
Greenskeeper
As I mentioned before, golf has a great job waiting for just about everyone. You don’t have to be Tiger Woods to make an awesome living with the game. The greenskeeper and teaching professional are two of the best golf jobs out there and they come with nice paychecks. The primary responsibility of a greenskeeper is to make sure that the course is both playable and beautiful. Most people who enter this field have extensive knowledge of landscaping and horticulture. This job carries a large measure of responsibility, especially at courses where the appearance is the main selling point of the club.
Starter/Marshall
This is one of those golf jobs suited best for people who enjoy the leisurely pace of the game. To put it simply, this is the person who makes sure that everything on the course is running smoothly. It’s a job that requires much less training, so it’s open to many more people. The starter will handle all of the tee times, making sure that each player gets off to his round at the appointed time period. In addition, this person will make sure each of the players keeps a steady pace of play throughout the day. This job is very important because without a proper effort from the course starter, players will be rushed and frustrated all day.
Seasonal Positions
Golf courses are notorious for having openings during the summer and during heavy periods. Those people only looking for short term work will quickly find that golf jobs are some of the best and more rewarding available. Some of these include maintenance and landscaping work, as well as a position within the pro shop of a golf course. Some individuals find work handling the golf carts, whether that means washing them or making sure they are in good condition.
Promotions/Advertising
Golf is becoming much more business oriented, as country clubs and golf clubs are looking to make as much money as possible. If you are an advertising professional who loves the game of golf, then you should look into combining the two. Golf courses are always looking for people to take their course to the next level. With more golf clubs popping up, the competition is fierce. In order to stay on top, courses are now putting people on staff who have the ability to make their course a well known commodity around the region. This is one of the golf jobs that people often overlook when thinking about the changing dynamic of the industry. As it becomes more of a business and less of a game, more business type opportunities will be opening up at courses around you.
